I forgot to add my favorite Book on CD of the year: "Fortress of Solitude" by Jonathan Lethem. It's a big'un (16 CDs) but the storytelling and language are stupendous.
I almost forgot my favorite Book on CD of 2009 (well, one that I listened to in 2009): Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, read by Ethan Hawke. (The reason I probably forgot is that i listened to it in February and my daughter was born in March and most things prior to her birth have been a blur- a happy blur).
Other Favorite non-fiction Books on CD: A century of recorded poetry (covers late 19th up to late 20th century poetry- a great audio resource!); and,
Plato and Platypus walk into a bar: Understanding philosophy through jokes, by Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein.
Also, if you like your poetry more contemporary, you can listen to podcasts on poetryfoundation.org (it's my new favorite thing to do while I'm ironing).
